We are tackling from a first principles perspective, critical AI tasks such as planning and reasoning as well as self improvement in agents.
James McClelland wrote the following in his seminal paper on emergence*:
We are inspired by this challenge and at the heart of our technology development efforts is the fundamental quest to build deeply intelligent systems where multiple distributed intelligent modules or agents work with each other and solve tasks cooperatively.
* J. L. McClelland ⁄ Topics in Cognitive Science 2 (2010)
Systems comprised of simple agents can evolve to exhibit complex patterns and capabilities that transcend those of any individual component. Computing has consistently evolved from monolithic systems to complex distributed architectures demanding orchestration—the personal computing era was launched not by centralized mainframes, but by distributed computing.
We are now entering the Agentic Era where we believe that the orchestration across agents will give rise to the emergence of unprecedented problem-solving capabilities.
Emergence’s researchers have worked at IBM Watson, Google Brain, the Allen Institute for AI, Amazon, Meta, and more. We collectively have over 25 PhDs.
Our offices are located in New York, Irvine, India, and Spain.
